How to set up water reminders that don't nag
Short answer: Limit reminders to your waking hours, space them out, and use an app that checks what you've already logged so it can stay quiet when you're on track and stop once you reach your goal. Reminders that ignore what you've done are the ones people end up switching off.

How water reminder apps work
Most hydration reminders are local notifications that the app schedules on your phone. Simple apps fire at fixed times whatever you've done. Smarter ones reschedule after each drink and compare your logged total to a pace for the day. iOS decides when notifications are actually delivered, so no app can promise exact timing, and Focus modes can hold them back.
Five settings that make reminders bearable
- Waking hours only. Set your wake and sleep times so nothing arrives at night.
- Fewer, better-timed reminders. Five well-placed nudges beat one every 30 minutes.
- A pause after each drink. If you just logged, you don't need a reminder in ten minutes.
- Stop at the goal. Once you've reached your goal for the day, reminders should end.
- Back off when ignored. If you skip a few, the app should get quieter, not louder.
Fixed times vs pace-based reminders
Fixed times are predictable: 10:00, 13:00, 16:00. They suit routines like meetings or classes. Pace-based reminders spread your goal across your waking day and only nudge you when you're behind that line. They're usually less noisy because they skip reminders you don't need.
How Dropkin's reminders behave
- Run only between the wake and sleep times you set.
- Smart Pace mode stays silent while you're on pace.
- Wait at least 45 minutes after a drink.
- Stop once you reach your goal for the day.
- Get quieter, never louder, when ignored.
- Tone (friendly, minimal and more) is separate from frequency. You can pause reminders for a while or turn them off completely.
- Answer from the notification itself: log your usual drink, a quick amount, or snooze.
If you'd rather have no reminders
That's fine. A Home Screen or Lock Screen widget is a quieter cue: you see your progress when you look at your phone, and nothing interrupts you.

Can a water reminder stop after I reach my goal?
Yes. Dropkin stops reminders for the day once your logged total reaches your goal.
How many water reminders a day is reasonable?
There's no single right number. Many people prefer a handful spread across waking hours. Dropkin's default Smart Pace style allows up to five a day and skips the ones you don't need.
Why do I sometimes not get a reminder?
iOS controls delivery, and Focus modes or notification settings can hold notifications back. Dropkin also deliberately skips reminders when you're on pace or just logged a drink.
