How to log water on Apple Watch

Short answer: To log water from your wrist, install a water tracker that includes a watchOS app, set your usual drink once, then tap it on the Watch whenever you finish a glass or bottle. In Dropkin, the Watch app shows today's total and progress and puts your usual amount on one big button, with quick amounts and a Digital Crown custom amount below it. If your iPhone is out of range, the Watch queues the drink and delivers it when the two reconnect.

Does Apple Watch track water on its own?

Apple Watch doesn't measure how much you drink. Water intake is something you record yourself. Apple Health can store water entries (it calls them Water under Nutrition), and you can add them by hand in the Health app on iPhone. Most people who want to log from the wrist use a third-party app with a Watch companion, which can save each entry to Apple Health for you if you allow it.

Set it up once

  1. Install Dropkin on your iPhone. The Watch app installs alongside it on a paired Apple Watch (or from the App Store app on the Watch).
  2. On iPhone, add the bottle or glass you use most in My Vessels with its real capacity, then pin it. That becomes the big button on the Watch.
  3. Optional: turn on Apple Health in Dropkin's settings so each drink is also written to Health as a water entry. Dropkin only asks to write water; it never reads your health data.
  4. Optional: move Dropkin near the top of your Watch app list or Dock so it's a press of the side button away.

Logging from your wrist

Raise your wrist, open Dropkin and tap your usual drink. A haptic confirms the log, with a different one when it takes you to your goal. Below the main button are quick amounts, and the custom screen lets you dial any amount with the Digital Crown. The ring shows progress toward the goal you set, and a small label tells you whether you're on pace for the day.

What happens without your iPhone

When the iPhone is reachable, the drink is sent immediately and the Watch updates with the confirmed total. When it isn't, the Watch shows the drink straight away and hands it to watchOS's background transfer queue, which delivers it when the devices reconnect. Each drink carries its own unique ID and timestamp, so a drink that arrives late is still recorded at the time you logged it, and a duplicate delivery is ignored instead of counted twice.

Can I log water on Apple Watch without my iPhone nearby?

Yes, with Dropkin. The drink shows immediately on the Watch and is queued by watchOS until your iPhone is reachable again. It keeps the original time and won't be counted twice.

Does Dropkin's Watch app need an account?

No. There is no account. The Watch talks directly to Dropkin on your iPhone.

Will Watch logs show up in Apple Health?

If you turn on Apple Health in Dropkin, each drink is written to Health as a water entry once, whichever device you logged it on.
